I'm totally with your robber. The laptop is so much more valuable to you than it is on the black market that he could not bring himself to levy that much harm for so comparably little reward. Taking laptops is a dick move. In jail laptop thieves are treated like sex offenders.
The change on the other hand was worth arguably less to you than its monetary value -- evidenced by people who pay to have change turned into "real money" -- and was ripe for theft.
This guy should write an book on the economy of theft and how to gain the most economic value while causing the least economic harm.

Hate to tarnish your image of the heroic robber, but they decided to yank my sister's macbook... which makes it even more mysterious.
